In Birmingham, there are currently more than 4,000 households experiencing homelessness, with approximately 90% of them being families, affecting an estimated 6,000 children. Many of these families are temporarily accommodated due to the unavailability of permanent social housing. It’s common for families to remain in temporary accommodation for over two years, which often lacks essential facilities and relocates them far from their children’s schools and their workplaces, causing challenges in terms of education and financial stability.
Furthermore, families in private rented properties and council tenancies frequently endure hazardous, overcrowded living conditions, surrounded by disrepair, dampness, and mould.
Shelter has partnered with the Oak Foundation to enhance the capacity and resilience of the communities it serves in Birmingham. The primary focus is on empowering people to actively contribute to solving the city’s issues. The Oak Foundation views this program as addressing particularly vulnerable and underserved areas within the city, with the goal of bringing about lasting and systemic changes.
DUJ has successfully initiated a new project in partnership with Shelter and overseen by BVSC.
We offer specialised support in raising awareness about tenant rights, handling property disrepairs, support with addressing rent increases that cannot be managed, eviction concerns, communicating with landlords, and providing tailored Information, Advice, and Guidance (IAG). DUJ provides signposting to other services and direct individuals to relevant resources.
